P0101 — Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance
P0101 means the airflow reading does not match what the engine should be doing. The sensor is usually dirty rather than dead, and cleaning it correctly is often the whole repair.
The engine will run, often with hesitation, a rough idle or poor economy. The module falls back on estimated values, which are workable but not accurate. This code will cause an emissions test failure.
What P0101 means
The mass airflow sensor is the starting point for almost every fuelling decision the module makes. It cross-checks reported airflow against throttle position, engine speed and manifold pressure, and sets P0101 when the number is implausible rather than absent. What causes P0101
Sensing element contaminated
Oil residue, dust or debris on the hot wire slows its response, so the sensor under-reports airflow. An over-oiled aftermarket air filter is the classic cause and the reason this code is common on modified vehicles.
Common misdiagnosis
Use dedicated MAF cleaner only. Brake cleaner or a cotton bud destroys the element and turns a cleaning job into a replacement.
Unmetered air entering after the sensor
A split intake boot or a loose clamp between the sensor and the throttle body lets in air the sensor never saw. The reported airflow is then genuinely lower than the real airflow, which is exactly what the module is detecting.
Air filter clogged or intake restricted
A filter that has never been changed restricts flow enough for the reading to fall outside the expected range at wide throttle. Cheap to eliminate and often overlooked.
Sensor genuinely failed
Elements do fail outright, but far less often than they are replaced. Confirm the reading against a calculated expectation before buying one.
How to diagnose it
Read airflow at idle and at wide open throttle
Compare the reported grams per second against what the engine displacement and speed imply. A reading that is plausible at idle but far too low at full throttle is the classic contaminated-sensor signature.
Inspect the intake between the sensor and the throttle body
Check the boot for splits, the clamps for tightness, and every connection for looseness. Flex the boot while the engine idles and listen for a change.
Inspect and clean the sensing element
Remove the sensor and look at the wire or film. Clean only with dedicated MAF cleaner and allow it to dry fully before refitting. Do not touch the element.
Check the air filter and the full intake path
Inspect the filter and the ducting ahead of the sensor for restriction, collapse or debris such as a nest.
